How to Wash Hair Extensions Properly: The Method That Protects Your Investment
Washing your hair seems simple. It’s something you’ve done your entire life.
But once you have extensions, the way you wash your hair matters more than ever.
At Salon 1827, we teach every client that proper washing is not just about getting your hair clean. It is about preserving the quality of your extensions, protecting your natural hair, and maintaining that seamless, polished result you leave the salon with.
When done correctly, your extensions will stay soft, manageable, and beautiful for months. When done incorrectly, you may start to notice dryness, tangling, or slipping much sooner than expected.
This is the method we recommend.
Start With a Full Detangle Before You Even Get in the Shower
This step is non-negotiable.
Before your hair gets wet, gently brush through your lengths and ends using an extension-safe brush. Always start at the ends and work your way up.
Water tightens tangles. If you skip this step, any small knots will become more difficult to remove once wet, which can lead to unnecessary tension on both your extensions and your natural hair.
Water Temperature Matters More Than You Think
Use lukewarm water, not hot.
Hot water can dry out both your natural hair and your extensions, and over time it can weaken bonds, tapes, or attachment points. Lukewarm water allows you to cleanse effectively without stripping moisture or compromising your install.
Let the water run in a downward direction, following the natural fall of your hair. Avoid flipping your head upside down, as this can cause tangling at the root and around your extension points.
Shampoo With Intention, Not Aggression
Apply a sulfate-free, extension-safe shampoo to your scalp only.
Gently work the shampoo into your scalp using your fingertips, not your nails. Think of this as a light cleanse rather than a deep scrub. The goal is to remove buildup without disrupting your extensions.
As you rinse, the shampoo will naturally cleanse the mid-lengths and ends without needing to be worked through aggressively.
Avoid piling your hair on top of your head or rubbing it together. This is one of the fastest ways to create tangling and matting.
Condition the Mid-Lengths and Ends Only
Conditioner is essential, but placement matters.
Apply your conditioner from the mid-lengths down to the ends of your hair, avoiding the root area and all attachment points. Conditioner applied too close to bonds or tapes can cause slipping or breakdown over time.
Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to gently distribute the product through your lengths. Let it sit for a few minutes to fully absorb before rinsing thoroughly.
Your extensions rely on this step for hydration, so consistency is key.
Support Your Hair While Rinsing
As you rinse out your conditioner, keep your hair in a natural, downward position and lightly hold your lengths.
This prevents unnecessary pulling at the root and keeps your extensions aligned. Rinse until the water runs clean and the hair feels soft but not coated.
Residue can lead to buildup, which contributes to tangling and dullness.
Drying Is Part of the Washing Process
How you dry your hair is just as important as how you wash it.
After stepping out of the shower, gently squeeze out excess water. Do not rub your hair with a towel. Instead, blot and press using a microfiber towel or soft cotton.
Before brushing, apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner or detangling spray through your mid-lengths and ends.
Always dry your root area completely, especially if you are wearing wefts, tapes, or keratin bonds. Leaving the root damp can lead to tangling, slipping, or even irritation at the scalp.
Air drying the ends is fine, but the attachment points must be fully dry.
How Often Should You Wash Your Extensions
Most clients do best washing their hair two to three times per week.
Washing too often can dry out the hair, while not washing enough can lead to buildup at the root. Your ideal schedule depends on your lifestyle, workouts, and product usage, which is why we tailor this during your appointment.
What Proper Washing Should Feel Like

Your hair feels soft, not stripped
There is minimal tangling, even when wet
Your scalp feels clean without feeling dry
Your extensions maintain their movement and shine
This is the standard we aim for with every client at Salon 1827.
