When to Replace Your Hair Extensions: A Guide to Timing & Lifespan
Knowing when it’s time to replace your extensions isn’t always obvious. Clients often ask: “Can I go just one more week?” Here’s how to know if your extensions are due for a refresh.
General Guidelines by Method
• Keratin Bonds: Last 3–4 months with no maintenance, but must be removed on schedule to prevent matting or breakage
• Tape-Ins: Require repositioning every 6–8 weeks
• Wefts (Sew-In, Hidden Bead): Typically repositioned every 6–10 weeks depending on natural growth
Signs It’s Time for Replacement
• Bonds or wefts have slipped or twisted
• Hair is tangling more easily, especially near the root
• You’re losing more extension strands than usual
• The hair no longer feels soft, even after conditioning
Should I replace the hair or just reinstall it?
High-quality extension hair can last 6–9 months with proper care. If the ends are split, frayed, or overly dry even after treatment, it may be time to invest in new hair.
